TFCA Kalimantan is a debt-for-nature-swap partnership between the Government of Indonesia (GoI) and US Government (USG), with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) as the Swap Partners, and KEHATI foundation as the Administrator of TFCA Kalimantan. The TFCA Kalimantan program works to support The Berau Forest Carbon Program (BFCP) and the Heart of Borneo (HOB) initiative in four target districts: Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan; Berau, Kutai Barat, and Mahakam Ulu, East Kalimantan. TFCA Kalimantan program objectives are to protect globally significant biodiversity, to improve community livelihoods, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and exchange the ideas and experiences related to forest conservation and Reduction Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+).

To support the objectives, in 2018 grantees continues activities including, First, species conservation efforts on released and monitored 11 orangutan at Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National park; rescued and transferred 1 female Sumatran Rhino “Pahu” from the threatened habitat to the sanctuary at East Kalimantan; survey on Irrawaddy dolphin at Mahakam River; survey and DNA identification on Banteng Borneo. Second, economic development for 1,599 communities with 15 products of non-timber forest products (agroforestry, handicraft, ecotourism). Third, enriched 319.1 ha forest area, and fire prevention for 1.285 ha forest. Fourth, book publishing on Orchid at Kersik Luway Reserve, Conservation Inside of Dayak Iban Weaving by grantee Asspuk (draft) and Conservation Pathway by grantee Kompad.

The cycle 4 process which has started since September 2017, of 69 proposals received by administrator and through selection process, 15 proposals was approved by OC on July 2018 with total grant commitment of UD$ 1,927,478. By the end of 2018, with 54 grantees the total grant commitment is USD 13,388,267 (IDR 171.494.629.373), and the total disbursement was USD 9,883,718 (IDR124.873.695.706).
On financial issues, on the 2018 management expenses approved by OC Rp8.273.314.193 (USD 574,117), the total expenditure was only 77% to support management activities such as personnel and facilitators, cycle 4 process, meeting and workshop, travel. Several underspent budget including monitoring trip which were more efficiently used by conducted parallel activities, and technical assistance providers, in which not all consultant are in place yet.

Future activities will include finalization on Implementation Plan 2018-2022, technical assistance for social forestry development, ecotourism development, improving community NTFP product to meet the market. Preparation for cycle 5 process, develop term of reference for TFCA Kalimantan midterm review to evaluate achievement and gain lesson learnt on the whole process.

The publishing of 2018 TFCA Kalimantan annual report as part of the transparency and accountability principles, and to promote program achievement by grantees. This report contains 7 topics: (1) Introduction, (2) Program Management, (3) Coordination and Consultation, (4) The Progress and Achievements, (5) The Dynamics, Challenges and Intervention Strategies, (6) Financial Status, and (7) Work Plan in 2019.
